Language & Literacy Fair

In an effort to encourage the practice of language and literacy skills among learners, the LATAZ National Council at its 6th March 2019 sitting resolved to hold a Language Fair in 2020. These guidelines have been developed to provide essential information to enable schools, district committees and provincial committees to organise smooth language fairs. They will also guide the holding of the National Language Fair in a manner that inspires stakeholder confidence. The guidelines are not exhaustive as they will be subject to periodic reviews to accommodate new trends, knowledge and unforeseen situations. 

Objectives

  1. To improve literacy at all levels of education.
  2. To promote the appropriate use of standard language practices
  3. Promote a healthy reading culture.

Provincial Language and Literacy Fairs could conduct competitions in the following additional categories

  1. Oral Paper presentation
  2. Poetry Recitation

Competition Categories

  1. Spelling
  2. Grammar Quiz
  3. Literary Terminology Quiz
  4. Essay Writing
  5. Drama
  6. Scrabble
  7. Debate
  8. Reading Competition

Levels

  1. Primary
  2. Junior Secondary
  3. Senior Secondary

Languages

  1. National Fair – English, French and Chinese.
  2. Provincial Fairs – English, French and Zambian Languages taught in respective provinces.
  3. District – English and Zambian Languages taught in that district.
  4. School Fairs – English, Zambian and Foreign languages taught in that school.

Modalities

Drama: All entities to act plays from the current list of prescribed books for Literature in English

Progression: The Fair activities will start from the school level and progress through to the national level.

Dress Code: All participating learners should be in school uniform and in possession of authentic School Identity Cards.

    Are all learners supposed to participate in all the mentioned categories?

      A learner should not take part in more than two categories.

    I want to know what dress code to use in case the district team in debate is made up of best speakers from various schools.

      Make T-shirts bearing the district name combined with a mutually chosen colour for the bottom.
